Regeneration!

Extratone Records has closed, we're moving on to Extratone Regeneration!

Episode 6 (by Exop(09#hy$ and KG & Friends)

Episode 6! I'm a bit too lazy busy with uni-shit to mix this month (I like to take a long time planning), so we're doubling-up on guests!

An exciting month, with SKRD!!!-100, an MG Mucus album, and EPs from Smiderpan and Monoqlom! Then, in the second half, ToneGenerator takes over to show off some of his favourites in his own, far more hostile and extreme, mixing style!

4th episode, with previews of Smiderpan, Exp_23.25, Speedkoyot, KGIOM and DJ Fleischfuck! That's right, five previews this time!

Edit: I made a small mistake, the Fleischfuck release isn't for guttercvnt, sorry!

Murdertones!

Here is an idea, a new possible technique. This may mean that Extratone can always accelerate without slowing down or drifting into ringing/silence. Sounds impossible? Let me explain!

Here is a gif of a barber's pole. There is an optical illusion at play here, so the pattern appears to always be rising and never falling. The Shepard Tone applies exactly the same idea, but with sound!

As shown, aside from the highest and lowest notes (which can be faded in/out or just go unnoticed) the notes are in the same state after sliding-up as they were before. Meaning this pattern can be looped over and over again seamlessly. Always rising but never escaping the chosen range of frequencies! HERE is an example.

Extratone producers are fond of blurring the line between tempo and frequency, so I'm trying to transfer this illusion from pitch... to BPM! So these will be called... Murdertones! So far my results have been varied, maybe you can help me in this experiment? Here is a recipe for producing a simple (2 layer) Murdertone:

Recommended tools: Audacity and Extratone Girlfriend
1. Pick a base tempo, X. Make it high (1000+BPM)
2. Record a pattern, Pattern 1, going from X to 2X BPM.
3. Record Pattern 2, going from 2X to 4X BPM, but make it last the same amount of time.
Pattern 2 needs twice as many beats as Pattern 1 if you are using the Extratone Girlfriend.
So if 'total beats' is 100 for Pattern 1, make it 200 for Pattern 2.
4. Make Pattern 1 fade in from silence.
5. Make Pattern 2 fade out to silence.
6. Play the two patterns simultaneously!
7. Copy and paste the resulting sound, make it repeat as much as you like!

I expect more layers = better results. So far I have only tried this experiment with 2 layers and 4 layers. They can both blend seamlessly, but there is room for improvement. In my experience it sounds better with plenty of reverb (increase 'wet', decrease 'dry'). When I have more free-time I hope to include an Murdertone generator in the Extratone Girlfriend to make the process easier and quicker, but right now I am too busy. Please do experiment with this idea, I think it has potential!

For fun, I made a reverse-Murdertone which created a cool slowing-down effect, and I'm using it in a track which will appear on an upcoming Eater of Sheep EP. Stay tuned!

420 update:
-8 layers example HERE. Far from perfect, need to make it more gradual or something.
-7 layers example with linear change HERE. Took a little bit of maths to get the layers all the same length. Results in interference, unsurprisingly, so there's like an extra rhythm which ruins the illusion.
-Renamed from Extrashepardtones to Murdertones, as it appears 7!cHO had a very similar idea HERE.

Episode 3 - Legion of Speedcore Special

A double-length one for you, that's two hours! This is to celebrate Legion of Speedcore: Eternal Trash, but of course we still have a peak into the future of Extratone Records: Safoh and Braininvader previews with a long-overdue look into the ToneGenerator release!

I cannot say "THANK YOU!!" enough, it was a magical night. <3

Extratone has a face. Allow me to show it to you...

It's not finished yet, but I like it so far. See you on Saturday/Sunday ;) Legion of Speedcore!
I will be playing some new tracks that have never been heard before, so be there!

Extratone Girlfriend - Miniature Extratone DAW

Here is some interesting software I wrote a bit back. It is quite awkward to use (you have to manually type the .xgfp extension when saving, I think it only accepts .wav kicks, requires Java to run, etc.) but was a great experiment.

I started work on a second version in December that would accept multiple-instruments at once and make much better tracks but it was taking too long to write. More time programming = less time making music, sadly.
Instead, I plan to make an Audacity plugin version soon if there is demand. I dream of a phuture in which anyone can make quality Extratone for free, without scary piracy-sites. ^_^
Thanks 7!cHO for suggesting I post this, I almost forgot about it!

February was a fairly quiet month for E.R. so we explore elsewhere a lot in this one. I didn't mean to skip ToneGenerator's EP, I just made this episode the day before that was released, so it will be in Episode 3 of course :)

Oh, and spoiler alert: I have something VERY special planned for Episode 3...

Thoughts: Classifying Extratone Subgenres

Pictured are two ways of comparing extratone and related tracks, and grouping them into genres, with examples included in red.

Although the 'Tempo Spectrum' has some uses it is over-valued and much more subjective than it sounds. For example, if I have a tone of alternating note-lengths, do I calculate the BPM from the longer or shorter note? Or do I average it? And what if the speed changes, as is often the case?

The 'Inconsistency Spectrum' aims to organise them in a much more useful way that better describes the character of each track. Coincidentally, tracks further down this spectrum are harder to place on the 'Tempo Spectrum'. This still has some flaws though: it is even more subjective (which isn't too bad as art is subjective anyway). For example, a tiny segment of 'Murder Extratone' is more wild than a segment of 'Deep Sea Extratone', but overall, 'Murder Extratone' is quite consistent, as similar segments are repeated many times. Perhaps we should to look at consistency on different orders of magnitude, but then we'd need to write entire pages to describe any later-invented subgenres!!

At the limit this spectrum breaks down again. Obviously as we make the tracks wilder they tend towards noise/glitch, which taken further will become an indecipherable wall of noise as we break down all the consistent elements. The inconsistency is itself consistent, so perhaps a horseshoe shape would be better suited to showing this! Then what if we spice up the wall? We get back to into normal noise, so we're in a bit of a loop. But this isn't extratone so I don't care. :D

Anyway, hopefully this has given you some food-for-thought, maybe we can move slightly away from the tempo-obsessiveness and start describing our art-form in more meaningful ways, thinking more about the consistency, the techniques involved, how dance-able it is, etc. Extratone is sooooo much more interesting than "WOAH BIG BPM NUMBER".

Defile Our Style And More

Recently finished my first EP of 2019 as Eater of Sheep (see picture, a possible cover image), and already working on the next! Looks like a very exciting year, possibly involving a split EP with Mr. Taylor Hackett later on! Of course, there will be a preview in the next episode of Phuture Extratone... ;)

Celebrate Extratone Sampler 6.66 and more with style! Sorry to AngryLumberjack, you will be included in the next episode. I made this episode before your EP was released, but we had some teething troubles so it was published after. Whoops!
